Some observations about the 8" Ike Port and 16-35

  1. Right before my last trip I bought the recommended 5510.81 8" Ike dome port to fit my 16-35 lens. I didn't have time to test it out. When I finally assembled and used it in Malaysia, the results were terrible. I had major vignetting problems. Also there was not enough space for a diopter.

This combination despite what the Ikelite and Reefphoto sites say is probably the wrong combination. The extension should be about 1 inch longer. This is probably also applicable to the 17-40 because they have almost the identical length.

See pictures of comparison of 5510.81 8" vs the recommended 5503.55 6" dome.

I bought the #5510.24 extension which is about 3/4" longer and will test it out next weekend.

  2. Interesting will - can you post some sample photos?

  3. The lens is very close to the dome. The vignetting could be the result of refraction.

  4. Since the lens opening is well beyond the plane of the mounting plate, the vignetting could be a reflection or refraction issue. Strobe placement is important with wider angle lenses, so if the strobes are too far forward, your type of problem can occur.

Please e-mail jpeg images to brett@ikelite.com for analysis. Diopters are not needed for these lenses.

Please notify me of your results with the longer port body.

    Regards,

    Brett
