Tokina 12-24 or Nikon 16mm behind a dome port?

  1. Maybe is lite strange question and i have discuss this before with some friends but her we go again

Untill now I have use a lite dome port with my 10.5mm & 16mm

I have done maybe something stupid and sould my 16mm Lens

    Now i have a 170 dome and i use the 10,5 & a tokina 12-24

Offen i think that i miss the 16mm lens. No offens 12-24 is great but behind a dome i think a fisheye fast lens will perform better that a WA zoom

I hope to get more contast, high quality and better corners in the same time more light in the lens

But i am not sure.. I shoot mostly human full & halvbody portraits. and if the posing and body fell the frame maybe a fisheye behind a dome is a better solution

  2. Lambis-

have you considered the Sigma 15mm FE....works well with the Nexus domes, good price point and quality good..

  3. Michael i have think about it.. the question is tokina or 15 / 16mm

I see u use the 12-24 & the 15mm with wich done u use them and what extension?

  4. Lambis -

The 15mm works like the 10.5 ...no extensions necessary...great lens, pretty fast focus...hard to take a bad picture...i only have the 170 domes...

  5. I used the Tokina 12-24 for Canon mount (same lens) and it's superb. As good as the name brand.

If you already have the 10.5 then I'd get the 12-24 as it's more versatile for what you do. You can do portraits w/ the 12-24 - it's what I used for my models Lambis (well, the 17-40 on full frame).

The fisheye does not look good for taking "people photos." Because it's not a full fisheye (it's cropped) you can't obviously tell that the fisheye effect was what the photographer was going for. Instead, your subjects just look fat and slightly distorted.

The 12-24 also has some distortion, but it's pincushion which has the opposite effect.

  6. so james .. you think for people photos a 12-24 tokina WA lens in a croped sensor and behing a 170 dome is better?

  7. I agree with James that rectilinear zooms are well suited for shooting people. I do not think that they give quite as good corner quality behind domes as a 15/16mm FE on a cropped sensor camera, but for your applications, Lambis, where the corners of you shots are usually blue or black, you should be fine.

  8. Hey James -

I know we have beat to death the discussion on the 12-24 (Nikon/Tokina)... I never had great success with this lens behind the Nexus domes. A diopter is also needed. Others seem to do better with these lenses but they may be using other housing/port combos..
