  1. Hi,

I am going on a Brother/Elphinstone tour in November and want to shoot the Oceanic whitetip.

What lens would you recommand? the 12-24mm, the 17-35mm or the 16m FE?

  2. all of them....!

The Whitetip is a bold beast, and if you've enough time with them it will be largely down to you - how comfortable you are getting close to them (or rather, letting them get close to you - they are used to divers at these sites). Of course other factors will also influence how good an encounter you'll have

Personally I would start with either the 17-35 or 12-24 - depending on whether you'd prefer to focus on head or full body shots.

Move on to wider lenses depending on your experiences in the first few days...

  3. I would take 17-55. From my experience, 17 mm is wide enough to shoot theese med size sharks. Although I had some dome touching encounters, most of the time I was shooting between 17-60. All my shots were taken with 18-70 kit lens, which is not that bad for this purpose. It is not the 17-55/f2.8 or course... does not cost 1.5k too. I have not tried anything wider, mayebe 15mm FE on crop sensor would be worth try.

For me 18-70 did the job.

  4. Strmko2,

nice shots! That reassures me that buying a port to house 18-70 was a good idea.
