New to Photography

Hi to all, new to 'Wetpixels' today! Looking for some advice re what to buy for my Canon EOS 350 D? I have just decided to take up some underwater photography and would like to know what is the best housing, strobes, lenses etc that can be recomended!

Wow, Peter that is quite a wide ranging question. But I'll have a go.

Generally underwater photography divides into macro and wide angle. For macro I would go for a 100mm USM Macro lens. And for wide angle either the Sigma 15mm Fisheye or the Canon 10-22mm zoom.

Regarding housings - your choice is simpler than for some cameras as not all the housing manufacturers support the 350D. I would look at Ikelite, Sea and Sea and UK Germany.

You would also want a strobe (maybe two). And I would choose either a Ikelite DS125 or an Inon Z240.

Anyway, I enjoyed that. I do not own or currently use any of the kit I have recommended! But I have tried to be as objective as I can be.

Peter, I would suggest waiting for someone who uses more similar kit to yours to contribute. While I think my advice is good, I am not a regular user of any of your kit - so I am sure someone else has better advice based on real experience.

Alex, as always thanks for the advice, just on my way back to Dubai from our annual leave in Thailand when by chance i have had the oppertunity in reading about a 'Shark Vergin' nice one!

I can relate to all you make mention of, and at this stage in my life(47) i think i am now ready for this type of encounter! I would be interested to know if it went as you reported and or was there a time when you felt you shoudn't be doing this?

You make mention of JASA and i wonderd for my first encounter would you recomend i approch Jim directly or do you have others that may be worth contacting?
