Hawaii ... Honolulu area

  1. I've got one day to dive and one day to snorkel after a business trip. I'll be travelling alone and was wondering if anyone had any operators they would like to recommend.

    Thanks,

  2. Gary, I've dove several times with Alex at AAA Diving on Oahu. I cannot reccomend them enough!

I despise dive ops that force you to dive with a DM, that babysits you and keeps you with the bottom-dwelling rototillers all in a herd. This invariably has you surfacing with 2000 psi because one of the rototillers has sucked their tank dry in record time.

AAA is the exact opposite. After a quick look at cards, logbooks, and gear (you can size someone up pretty quick that way), Alex would give us a briefing of:

    >here's the site

    >here's where you find the interesting stuff

    >be back on the boat with 500psi and time left on the computer

    >have a great dive, pool's open

WOW! AAA diving was like a breath of fresh air. The boat is way bigger than it looks on the website, they pick you up at your hotel, in all a much better experience than I've had with other dive ops on Oahu.

Speaking of the other dive ops, here's some interesting reading on the state of Oahu diving, which is way different from other places. From experience I can sadly say that it's all true.

For snorkeling, the tourist trap of Hanauma Bay is OK, as long as you don't mind looking at the remains of a reef that has been trampled into oblivion by thousands of clueless vacationers. However, the reef outside the inner reef is pristine (because no one goes that far out) and in fact we'll be scootering that area on our next trip, it's that great.

    Have a good trip!

    All the best, James

  3. Thanks James,

    I'll hook up with them.
