Slave Strobe for Olympus Stylus 500

  1. I have an Olympus Stylus 500 and recently purchased the housing for it. As it is a point-and-shoot with no hot shoe, I am looking for a slave strobe that will work with it. I have a Nikonos SB-105 and tried that but apparently the Stylus must emit a pre-strobe fire that causes the SB-105 to fire prematurely.

Does anyone know of any digital slave strobes that work with a Stylus 500?

    Thanks,

    Mark Brandenburg

  2. Inon or Ikelite seem to be Wetpixel favorites. BTW, I'm not sure if the Stylus has this mode or not but try going into the settings and setting the flash to manual. Then select an output. Try using that to trigger your 105. Later,

  3. Hi Mark,

my wife used a stylus 600 plus the Heinrichs converter with a Sea&Sea strobe on our recent holiday to Bali - results were (in terms of exposure) 80% very good, 10% perfect, 10% for the trash bin.

The converter web page says the SB105 is "compatible with limitations" - whatever tat means. Have a closer look at:

If you go with the converter, it is important that you use some black tape or so on the flash window of the housing - there must not be any light going directly from the internal strobe to your subject, otherwise exposure is a lottery - at least with our Stylus 600.

    Regards,

    Joerg

  4. Joerg,

Thanks! This looks like exactly what I need. I'm going to order one. I'll let you know how it works.

Thanks again, you saved me from selling my Nikonos and SB-105 to try and buy a Digital strobe!

    Best regards,

    Mark

  5. I also have an Olympus Stylus 500 and on the market for an inexpensive strobe setup as I only use this once a year. Most of what I've read here point to Ikelite & Inon strobes, but I'm just not sure I can sink almost $1k for a strobe setup.

I'm considering the Sea&Sea YS-15, or the Fantasea CoolFlash RL - Sunpak Remote Lite II. Any comments on these? I might consider the YS-25 setup if that makes a big difference from the YS-15.

    Thanks.
