New Sony HD FX7 ?

  1. A lot of rumor info going around including a pic. Looks like it will be bigger than the A1, smaller than the FX1, around the same size as the VX2000.

This may be just what I was waiting for.

Interesting tidbit of information Ron, I did some digging and I think it is more than just a rumor - so much so, I posted a news release on UWDV.

Based upon what I have found, this is more than just a rumor - I think it is a clever form of subtle advertising to wet the appetites of those who are still on the fence about shooting HD (Myself Included).

I myself just upgraded my NLE workstation to a dual core setup with 4GB RAM in anticipation of moving to HD within the year - sounds like its a great time to those who have held out.. :)

  3. This looks good...

I will be excited with the outcome.. Never thought of an 'upgrade' to the VX range..

If it has all that we thought it would, as well as a decent LUX rating then 'YIPEEE'

    Lets all cross fingers.

  4. did i miss the FX2-6?

    haha

    looks like a nice camera....

you just knew Sony would come up with something after the Canon announcements....

sorta looks like it would fill the PDX10 range...

  5. PDX10.. wasn't that the '950' upgrade, which is now the (excellent) A1.

I was going for the VX2000 after seeing Camdivers stuff in Yap in 2002 but then got side tracked by the PD170's. But "bank balance says no" so had to wait for HDV upgrades..Blah de blah de blah...

Come on Sony...and start laying out plans Amphibico..Housings, lenses..etc...If they all come out within a short period of each other it will be a magnificent accomplishment and my credit card will be burning WHITE HOT !!!!! HA, haa ha..hahahhahahahaahahahahaah.

    Sorry..

  6. I noticed that the image posted here does not have a upper flip monitor on the handle. That seems to be a major feature of the FX1. I would be quite sad to see that go missing as it looks like an awesome way to shoot UW especially with the L&M housing. Any thoughts about that?

The only reason I went with the A1 U was because of the size and weight of the housings for the Z1 U and FX1, if this cam is about the same size, what about it would make an improvement over the Z1? There will have to be something other than cost that makes it attractive. One is a 3 cmos chip and the other a 3 ccd chip. The cmos using less power but there has got to be more than that.

  8. Didn't I read, smaller and cheaper..Or am I missing the point some where...

    Smaller & cheaper..Smaller & cheaper...

Nah, still sounds good to me.

P.s Steve hows your A1 coming along, after all the fuss we have been encountering.??? My babies been out of the water for a while but soon I'm heading towards Singapore with the intent of some varied trials..

  9. I was diving with someone over the weekend using the Phenom and Z1. What a nice bit of kit - but jeeeez it was HUGE. This FX7 looks nice, but I still wish Sony could come up with something the size of the A1 with 3 chips and better low light performance. They did it for SD with the 900/950, so I can't really work out why it's 'that' much harder, or why they choose not to do it with HDV.

  10. When I first saw the picture of the camera, I immediately flashed back to my old CCD-VX3. I think what Sony is trying to do with this camera is entice videographers - not U/W videographers since we're tiny percentage of camcorder sales - who are shooting VX2000's, VX2100's and PD150/170's to upgrade to HDV.

So it doesn't matter how small it is relatively speaking. Should be fairly easy for the housing mfr's to re-tool their existing VX series housings for this one. Especially with the LCD screen closed, it probably just about fits now. And the housing will be smaller than the FX1's since there's no top mounted LCD to contend with.

  11. I hope it's worse than a Z1 as I'm about to take the plunge!

According to that pic the controls are in substantially different places to the VX2000 so if the camera does basically fit the VX2000 housings there would be substantial retooling to do, especially the mechanical housings. Also the SD ports would almost certainly vignette a lot with an HD camera behind them and need redesigning.

It's of more value to manufacturers like Amphibico or LMI who cast or extrude their housings to be able to reuse their VX tools than to someone like Gates who machine out of solid.

  12. I cannot see it being better than the Z1, that would be false economy by sony..

More like the PD150-170(Z1) against the VX2100(FX7) sort of thing..

Well thats my hope as the 2100 was a good little number.

  13. All the rumours are suggesting it to be a HD version of the VX series, pitched somewhere inbetween the A1 and Z1 and possibly replacing the FX1 altogether. I think you're safe with your Z1 purchase Nick! :)

    Cheers, Simon
