Fathoms 120 Monster Lens

  1. Hi All,

I'm working on the promised review of the Gates Z1 and the accessories I recently purchased. As a teaser I've had a lot of questions regarding the Fathoms 120 degree wide lens. Here's a still taken at 15m after a regular white balance on a dive slate. No lights were used, no diopter on the camera and at full zoom through on the lens. The subject was about 18 inches from the lens.

So far this glass has met and passed all tests with flying colors.

    Mark.

  2. Mark,

Great to hear you are off and running with the wide lens. Look forward to a full assesment of it's performance in all conditions. I imagine it will deliver in flying colors:)Shawn

  3. Yeah Shawn,

This glass is huge....The complete review is almost done, up to 12 pages with pics etc. Here's a few more teasers.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  7. Have you seen any softening of the edges?

  8. Hey Mark,

I'm using the Gates 2.5 monitor. What do you think of your larger one? I find myself very frequently going back to the eyepiece because the contrast and resolution is so much stronger and sharper.

  9. Trevally shot looks awesome Mark. Can't wait to see some footage and looking forward to the review. Would be interested to know how tricky full manual control is.

    Mind that hard coral....

  10. Hi Guys,

The full review is almost done, just brushing it up and checking the final layout. Couple of days max and I should be ready to post it.

Nick, full manual control is something you should try. It is very pleasing when you nail the shot. Its a massive learning curve but will stand you in good stead for the future (I don't think RED is gonna have any auto settings whatsoever) :P !!!

Steve, same here. Also for the setting. Thus far I have got the image on the monitor but all the vital control settings are still not evident on the screen. When I set or change settings I have to look through the eyepiece anyway so I check the viewfinder for a better idea of how the scene is looking. I have also noticed that the monitor is lacking in definition but that stands to reason when using an SD monitor on a HDV camera. I only use it for reference too as I think the guidelines / black boundaries as I have down convert set to Letterbox may be slightly out. I have done some tests on that front so don't really use the monitor if traveling or framing a developing scene.

Kelpfish, the still of the jacks is taken from full wide. No cropping no adjustments. I have not seen any vignetting, distortion or softening at the edges. Pretty glad about that seeing as the glass costs almost $4,500!!

    Cheers guys,

    Mark.
