Aquatica's 8 inch dome port information ?

  1. I thought I'd ask if any one could tell me from their experience if Aquatica's thread on 8 inch dome port have any problems with leaking, and if their good optical quality ?

I bought a complete new Aquatica housing on E-Bay, $ 350. It's a Nikon 8008s / F801s with two ports, one flat with a extension ring, and a 8 inch dome port. I plan on adapting these two ports to my own housing I built for my D2X. I'm also wondering if any one knows the thread pitch of the dome and if it's metric ?

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated,

  2. I love the Aquatica housing, I admit there are some better features on the more expensive housings but my housing never dissapoints me, a great value. I do a lot more shallow work than deep work where leaks happen the most and never have had an issue. When you push down on the dome port you can feel the secure air lock then turn tight. I never doubt the dome area. Recently got back from Gudalupe, 5 days in a shark cage my housing got bumped hard a lot, never the glass but the top and sides of the the port and back, never a drop inside. Optical quality is great, I did tests with grids and newspapers and never needed diopters. I don't know the curverture radius of the dome but that I believe is a big factor in optical quality. Aquatica will answer any question they are great give them a call or email from there website regarding the thread pitch

  3. The 8008s housing is a threaded mount while the the newer (n90s and after) are bayonet mount, the change was done for convenience purpose and not for " improvement" of the sealing quality. Both system are efficient and as any mounting method require vigilance from the user, e-mail Aquatica at info@aquatica.ca and ask Blake for the spec's. BTW the mounting flange may have change but the dome per say remain the same as always.

Show us some pictures of your finished housing, I'm always curious to see how folks tackle the issue of housing a camera, most of the "big guy's" started out as basement affair. so maybe we have a Furth generation (pun intended) coming up :(, well at least you have world class optic up front of your baby :)
