  1. I am currently trapped in La Paz MX by Hurricane John. Also have broken rib. Did have some luck though.

  2. Sorry about the bad luck Dave, but with orca pics it's definitely not all bad. I might even trade orca for rib. Great shot.

  3. Sorry to hear that you're stuck Dave. Let us know how it turns out in the end.

  4. nice shot Dave! you'll have to tell us more about the broken rib when you get back. have a couple shots of tequilla for the pain. --will

  5. It is good to hear from you Dave. I was thinking about you guys while watching at the ominous weather reports. I am glad to hear that you are all right, but there must be a good story about the rib.

  6. Dave, who cares about weather or ribs when you got a shot like that!!!!!

    sweet....

you in the water with them on scuba? freediving?

  7. Dave, where in La Paz are you staying? We were at Club Cantamar last year in December, and we did see a few small whale sharks and the vis was OK. Hotel service sucked. Not sure we're going back. If not for the diving, there isn't much in La Paz to keep me comming back.

Great luck in finding those Orca before the storm hit! The weather was too poor to even get out to Los Bajos for the Hammerheads when we were there. Still wore the Cali 7mm's though. Have fun if you can even with a bad rib.

  8. Broken rib, Orcas...

Looks like a good report to wait for.

  9. Got home on time. Road from La Paz to Cabo was closed today but only two bad spots and we got by them.

Definitely something wrong with rib but not bothering too bad. Am still diving. It will take awhile to digest all that happened.

  10. Come on Dave. These tidbits are just making me anxious to hear the rest of the story. Was it a mistimed swimstep or did one of those bad boys headbutt you? Inquiring minds want to know.

  11. Here is a gallery from the trip. A first effort.

The whale shark and Orca shots were taken free diving.

We stayed at Los Arcos while in town. Only place to stay in a Hurricane. They have their own generator and strongly built.

Trip was a liveaboard on the Don Jose. Through Baja Expeditions.

  12. You'll have the pictures long after the rib is mended and the rain has gone. Are you by any chance with the Brits? That's Jamie or Luke or even honorary Brit Andreas?

  13. Cool stuff Dave.

I remember when I first saw Orcas in the water and thought, aren't they just adorable big puppies, until the "killer" whales. They were playful and curious. Then I saw them hunt and play with a live seal for 15 minutes. And one mother orca came back with a great white in her mouth. Then another time, 3 orcas peeled the skin off a common dolphin while playing ping pong with the carcass at 100ft. So they're not puppies but they are gorgeous.

  14. Sorry, don't know the Brits. Just my sister in law who doesn't dive.

These were mammal eating (vs fish eating) Orcas. I didn't feel to nervous though. Other members of the group admitted to being nervous. If they wanted to they could pick you off the boat before you could blink so I figure it's not worth worrying about.

It was impressive when they stopped and "spy hopped" our boat. We got two passes by them. Between passes one of them did a tail slap just in front of our panga. I wondered if it was a warning.

Very different behavior from that of dolphins. Very curious. One just stopped vertically and stared at us for a few seconds. (picture in the gallery) They clearly were not afraid of us.

Pictures were taken at El Bajo seamount out of La Paz. The hammerheads the site is famous for appear to have been fished out.

  15. Dave,

The ribs were injured because of that wrestling match you got in with the Orca, right?? :P
