I have just bought the Tokina 12-24mm and tested it with the canon 500D +2 Closeup lens. Without the close up the images were sharp, and when mounted the +2 close up lens the images were clearly less sharp. I tested ( same zoomrange) the same close up lens with my Nikon 17-35mm and with or without the close up the pictures were both sharp. all pictures taking between 0,5-1 meter.
Does anybody uses the Tokina 12-24 mm with a close up lense and having the same problems or is it a sample problem?
How is this with the sigma 10-20mm??
Rob
Hi,
I just forgot to tell you that I made the photos on land!!!!!
Rob
Rob-
I have the sigma 10 - 20 for my Nikon d2x in nexus housing and it works well without a diopter.. Im much happier with its results than my old Nikon 12-24..

p.s. All in the water testing...not on land..
One of my guys has been shooting a Tokina 12 - 24 with a D70 in an aquatica housing, all I can say is pin sharp without the diopter.

You should try underwater! The purpose of the diopter is to allow closer focus, in this particular case on the virtual image formed by the dome port. The latter only forms underwater due to the difference in the index of refraction of water and air. B)

Hi,
you were right I tested in the water, no problems anymore with focusing, but now I have vignetting in all corners. So I will test it tomorrow again in the pool without a diopter.
Starbuck, what do you like beter about the sigma 10-20mm? I read in forums that the sharpness of the Tokina is much better than that of the sigma? do you agree whith that?
Rob
Hey Rob-
The 12-24 issue has been debated for years on this forum. I never had good luck with the Nikon 12- 24....Tokina could be better. BUT, I was using my 12-24 in a Nexus housing. My Sigma seems to focus fast (could be the D2X), sharpness looks great throughout zoom range and colors look fantastic. I'll have posted results with 10-20 when I get back from Guadalupe. One other factor, my Nikon 12-24 could have been "bad" out of the box....I never did send to Nikon for a checkup...something else to consider..
