Dahlia anemone - Scotland

Can anyone tell me exactly what these little creatures are on this Dahlia anemone on the west coast of Scotland?

Any idea what they are doing there - is there an interesting association going on and how common are they on this type of anemone?

  2. Those are amphipods. Sorry - haven't a clue about family, genus, species, or if this is a specific association. I suspect it is. Many species of amphipods are commensals on other inverts and the fact that their color matches the anemone indicates they are at least feeding on it. Maybe not directly on the anemone's tissue, maybe just eating dead cells & mucus but that's enough to give them the color.

  3. Moderator Matt Segal has a lot of great shots of these guys. Maybe he'll post one

  4. I've seen/photo'd a similar creature on snakelocks anemones - there a paper about it - I'll try to find a copy and post details.
