More than 1:1 with the efs 60mm macro

  1. As most of you already know getting more that 1:1 magnifications out of the popular efs 60mm lens on a cropped sensor camera is not an easy task. Mainly because it is not possible to mount a converter on an efs lens. And mounting a dipter is not a good idea because of the lens close focus disctance is very short already without a diopter.

I have however found out that if i mount an EF12 extension tube on the lens and then mount a kenko 1,4 converter on the extension tube it works just fine.

The camera can autofocus in good lighting conditions if I use the center af spot.

It does not recognice that the converter is attached (I can still set f2,8) but I think that is irellewant for how I plan to use the combination.

I does not seem to produce any vinjetting at all and the sharpness looks allright...

I can publish a few topside test shots here if anyone is interested.

The only drawback that I have found is that the close focus distance is very low so you might risk hitting the corals (or whatever you are shooting) when shooting if your not careful...

I hope to try this combination on my upcomming trip to lembeh next month.

  2. Just remember that you can no longer focus to infinity when you use an extension tube. So you will be limited to super macro on that dive.

Here is some math you may find interesting.

This combination will give you a maximum magnification of 1.68:1 when focus is set to closest and a minimum magnification of 0.28:1 when focus is set to infinity.

So this will allow you to photograph subjects as large as 3 inches (7.6cm) down to as small as 1/2 inch (1.3cm).
