Olympus C7070 stolen - Do I buy the same camera?

7 posts
  1. Last week, while in Maui, HI, my Olympus C-7070 was stolen out of my rental car. Now I'm in a bind. I have an Ikelite housing, DS-125 strobe, Inon wide-angle lense, and lots of small extras. I don't know what to do now. So I'm looking for help/opinions.

I have only found one place that still has any C-7070s in stock. Do I buy one? If I was going to sell my gear and step up to a digital SLR, would it be better to get the camera and sell it all, or just sell the gear?

Can I use the DS-125 with other (non-Ikelite) housings? It has a connection between the strobe and housing that interfaces with the camera. Or should I sell it with the housing?

And what percentage of the original price should I expect to be able to get when selling used items like this?

    Thanks for you help!

    Greg

  2. It sounds like you have a great setup. Personally I would replace the 7070 - you will battle to find a better replacement P&S camera. But then I am biased.

  3. Sorry to hear about your camera. How much do they want for the 7070? If it's under $500, I'd get one.

Don't buy another 7070 just to sell the housing. That's a recipe for losing money. If you want to get a DSLR, sell the housing and Inon lens separately.

Yes you can use the DS125 with other housings. You would probably need a different synch cord.

where in Maui was it stolen? I live here and am afraid to say this is all too common.

7070's are getting hard to find, but I can't think of a better p&s. The guys that work on our boats shoot w/ 5050 and 5060's. Many are on their 2nd or 3rd camera and just hit up ebay if they get a flood.

good luck and I hope you enjoyed Maui despite this event.

  5. A group of us went snorkeling Honolua bay and parked on the road. They popped the locks, likely through the cracked window, took the cash out of my wallet (in the back of the car) and ignored the bag and purse next to my shorts. Grabbed my camera bag, a friends video recorder bag (and camera), my backpack, relocked the car and ran. they missed one nice cell phone, another wallet and other misc. items.

I'm finding the used 7070 camera's are going for more than what I paid for mine new.

So does anyone want to buy an ikelite housing for either a 7070 or 5060, a DS125 strobe, Inon wide angle lenses and all the other extras, minus the camera of course? :-( Seriously I may just end up listing the items and selling those.

    Best regards,

    Greg

  6. Ok. I will purchase the DS125 and the INON WA....OR....I will sell you a 5060 w/ Olympus case. I might take the Ike case of your hands for a song although I don't need it.

This is a very common spot for this type of theft. farther north at the Nakalele blowhole, the parking lot is filled with broken auto glass.

I Looked into getting a 7070 setup just a little while ago, and could not believe the prices. Even the 5060 has held a good resale price.

Olympus could have sold a lot more of these. You can get a used Olympus E-1 for the same price as the 7070
