  1. i made some nice quick time movies with my olympus c404z (sea snake, anemone fish  brutally attacking me :) ), but, for some reason i cant upload them to my web page. does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? maybe i have to change it into some video file?? (i dunnow,..)

so the problem is, when i make a page on my computer with a Quick Time Movie,..everything works. but when i upload the page, then the movie doesnt work anymore.

i hope somebody has any ideas about this,

  2. Herwin,

It sounds like there is compatibilty problems with QT on your web page. Check with the server. Before you do do that create standard Windows compatible files, either MPEG or AVI format and upload these. See if these work. They should do. This WILL mean your server will need QT compatibility i.e. you will need the plug-in. I have found compatibility probs with QT in the past. Because of this I have stuck to utilising Windows Media Player.

Now then next point what format or file types is your camera saving the video images? I assume it is compressed in order to keep file size down i.e MPEG. or it may be uncompressed AVI. Let me know. If it is either you should be able to upload these direct to the server.

    Hope this helps for now

  3. hello mark!

    thanks for the reply.

as far as i can see, my camera saves a movie as a "quick time movie"file. when i download it on my computer, it comes out as QT movie. that is kind of what i was trying to figure out,....to make them mpeg, or make them suitable to play with windows media player.

    i dunno,..what is AVI :) ?

i am pretty sure if the movies would be mpeg, i wouldnt have any problems. How did you make the change from QT to WMP?

  4. Herwin,

Firstly have a look in your camera menu or manual & see if you can change the video file to save in anything other than QT. If you cant there are two options.

    1. upload a QT plug in to your web site (I wouldnt go down this route)

    2. download some shareware software from the web that converts QT files to Mpeg or any other format. Heres one link to try.http://www.eo-video.com/ You may want to run a search thro Google for 'quicktime to Mpeg converters' to check out other shareware. This is probably your best option as you can then stick with more common file formats such as Mpeg, which is recognised by Windows Media player and others.

BTW avi is a video file too but is raw. In otherwords it is not compressed like Mpeg. There will be some quality loss with Mpeg which varies depending whether you use Mpeg 1 or 2 but essentially both keep file sizes down and more workable. AVI files are massive in size since they are raw straight from your camcorder. I would advise you not to use these. They take up too much harddisk space.

    Hope this helps.

  5. All kinds of video file formats are used on the web including Quicktime. This problem is not really a video question as much as it is a web programming question. "What is the best way to embed video on my webpage".

The real problem you face is the size of the videos and their ultimate download speed for the people you hope will enjoy them. There are tools that are used for this. Some that come to mind are the built-in Premiere export utilities, Media Cleaner, and the just-released Sorenson Squeeze. (If anyone recommends others, please jump in, I'm not the expert on this!). Converting between quicktime, avi, mpeg, and others may turn out to be important but it will not fix your immediate problem.

What you need to do is (1) pick a video format that supports the way you want the video to be seen on the web, (2) find a way to convert the video you have into that format at the right size, and (3) make sure you know how to transfer it to the hosting web server properly. I have some experience with this, so you could look at my site and see if it gives you any ideas.

If you continue to struggle with this, perhaps you can provide more specific details so I can better help.

  6. thanks for the ideas! i will try them out, and let you know which one worked for me. Since this will take some time B) i will probably post next weekend or so,..

  7. There's one important ingredient you didn't mention... HOW you're embedding the QuickTime file in your page.

QT, as with most other video formats, has a number of parameters that should be passed to the plug-in. These should be in an embed/object tag.

If you're using Adobg GoLive, simply drag the video into the page and GL will generate all of the parameter tags for you. (Other applications such as Dreamweaver will do this, but you first need to use the pliug-in manager to download the QT plug-in, make sure you register the product and your copy of the download manager, have DW install the plug-in, then relaunch the application. I'm not sure about MS FrontPage.)

You can also cheat by checking out the source code of any page on Apple's QT site for some hints about how to do it.
