WAS Patiently waiting for my YS-110s

8 posts
  1. I've got a pair of Sea&Sea YS-110 strobes on order which should arrive this week (fingers crossed). It's my hope that these will work well as a pair with my 5D rig, replacing my single YS-90DX. When I get them I'll try to post my impressions.

My ys-110 is on back order until late Oct :) and that is straight from Sea & Sea.

I'm going to use it with a Nikon 8400 & ikelite housing. I'm pretty excited.

The first batch of strobes was shipped domestically in Japan. No ETA on the second batch, which is when the US distributor should see their first shipment.

  4. Apparently there has been a delay (for us) in getting CE mark approval, but it's done now and it sounds like Japan will be shipping next week now. However, like it says in many underwater photography manuals, holding one's breath is not recommended. :D

Some time before the end of October would be nice and seems reasonably likely now. Please,Yamaguchi-san, please... :)

  5. They finally arrived yesterday, having come via special courier from Japan. These are the first CE marked YS-110s to make it to the UK.

I gave them a quick test last night, before going to curry. Yes I can still prioritise even when cool toys arrive.

At first I thought there was a big problem with the rig, as the strobes failed to illuminate the shot at close range. Then I realised I had the 5D in 1600 ISO, so the main flash would be too short for the TTL system to render, so they didn't fire. I'm seriously glad I had that hitch in the living room - underwater I might not have figured out what was going on. Needless to say I felt thick and relieved.

The quality of light seems pretty good at first sight. I'll do a proper test later this week. The LED aiming lights are great and operate like the modelling lights on my Bowens studio strobes, staying off until the strobes have recharged.

Can you turn the Led aiming lights off?

    First post. Been a long-time lurker :D .

My YS-110s supposedly shipped yesterday via overnight courier (I'm leaving Saturday for Belize) and should be waiting for me at the shop this evening. Can't wait to play with them.

  8. Can you turn the Led aiming lights off?

Yes you can, they're off by default. To turn the light on, you press a button on the back of the strobe body. Press it again to turn it off.
