Mini Q40 LED focus light

4 posts
  1. I have been considering buying a focus light since returing from Sulawesi last month. After reading the Backscatter artical by Brad Brown on focus lights I am now convinced. I have been looking at the mini Q40 with LED option, but unfortunatly the Mini Q40 under review is only the standard version.

Does anybody use a mini Q40 LED and how does it compare to the standard Q40 and other focus lights?

  2. I've used both a Q40 with the standard bulb and one with the LED bulb. As a focus assist light I have not found any difference between them. I much prefer the LED version as it lasts for ages. The LED bulb has a whiter light appears a bit less bright to my eyes.

I too read the report you mention and was interested to hear how badly this torch was rated as a focus assist light. For me it has worked fine. I have not used anything else so to know if I am missing out on something.

  3. I use the LED. I like it a lot better than the non led version. The focus lights take a lot of abuse and the old styed ones seem to fail on a regular basis. The LED light does not seem to have a problem with this.

  4. It’s better to use some diffuser with thus lights.

An option is to insert wrinkled foil over the reflector, its gives more wide and unified beam (of course the beam won’t work well for distance)
