Ikelite/Rebel XT 350 port questions

6 posts
  1. Hi,

I want to buy ports on a Ikelite, but would like to know before if there is any known problems with the following lens and the following ports (especially quality and edge blur).

    Ikelite #6871.35 on a Rebel XT 350.

    1) Can you use the flat port without any bluring edge at 18mm with the 18-55 that come with the Rebel ?

    2) Do you have an advantage buying the 8" dome vs the 6" dome with the 18-55 lens ?

    3) I'm willing to put the extra money to buy the 8" dome instead of 6" for the futur. Is there any backdraw to use the 8" dome in macro ? like lost of quality vs a 6" dome ?

The reasons I'm asking those funny questions, is that I'm not willing right now to invest on all port combination + lens combination :)

  2. I'd recommend you purchase the 8 inch dome in preference to the 6 inch.

I gave up using the lens with the 6 inch port after only 3 dives. It was a challenge to get focus lock in the 6 inch dome, but it works a treat in my #5510.22.

  3. I used the 18-55 in a 6" port with no problems, however IMHO the 8" is the better option.

With the 8" you also have the a range of extenders to fit behind the 8" and allow you to use it with a much wider range of lens.

  4. You don't want a dome for macro. Use a flat port. The 8" dome is great for wide angle.

let's say i'm geared up for a wide angle photo safari but ended up I found a sea horse.....will I have more problems getting a decent pictures with a 8" dome then a 6" dome at macro....that was more the meaning of my question.

as well as the opposite with the flat port.....

    thanks for reply !

  6. I thought you meant macro with a macro lens. A dome takes away the magnification factor of the water. That's why they are so nice for wide angle. At the 55 end I think you will get approximately the same field of view you would get on land without the port. I have no idea how close it will focus.
