camera specific settings tips: Nikon Coolpix 990

Hy Guyz,

in this topic i'd like to raise the question

of your favourite metering mode. Is

it "Matrix", "Spot", "Center-Weighted"

or "Spot-AF-Area" ? I started with

"Matrix" but also did very nice pictures

using the "Spot" mode, espespecially

when doing macros.

Also I think of using a constant exposure

compensation of -1.5 on my next trip to

the red sea as a preset. With this I hope

to get a nicer blue, as Eric advised to do

so for the Canon D30. Did anybody here

already try this with his Coolpix?

I shot with the 990 in manual mode as well, and found that it worked well (instead of just setting -1.5 exposure compensation). That way, exposure wouldn't change if I pointed at darker or lighter subjects. You're mostly aiming for that nice dark blue, anyway, setting the flash to properly light up your close-up subject.

This also lets you shoot with crazy strobe firing. With my 990, I routinely shot at f11, 1/500th-1/1000th sec for macro photography, and my SubStrobe 200 did TTL at those exposure values very well, resulting in VERY crisp photos. When I shot slower, with apertures wide open, the system overexposed almost all of my TTL shots.

I just want to thank everyone who shared their settings-experience with me (especially Eric Cheng and James Wiseman). The trip to Sharm El-Sheikh was really cool and I managed to get some nice shots with TTL now! My advice is to constantly underexpose -1.3 stops and shoot in Aperture Priority Mode.

Doing so, the following fotos were done using a SUBTRONIC ALPHA PRO strobe, which is really strong (maybe too strong for digital photography, but excellent quality). For this you should as well put the STROBE CORRECTION in the Coolpix's menu to -1.3 stops.
