Z2 Autumn next year.????

  1. Hi all,

Just been browsing over a vast number of forums..

Word is out that an upgrade for the Z1 the 'Z2' will be out Autumn next year. Featuring better 'low light' of all things..Keeping in with the PD150 to 170 jump. We maybe looking at a 2 or even 1LUX monster. Also there is talk of a switch to 3xCMOS... All this and using the same shell/case as the Z1. Good for Phenom owners.

O.k these are just rumours but its a quick change around for you FX1 - Z1 owners.. Looks like we will be upgrading every year from now. ;):)

    Sod it I'm going stills...

  2. Sounds very plausible Dean. Would be fantastic if it fits the Z1 housings. I'm guessing Sony would use a Z2 to hit back at the likes of RED who may dent their share at the top end. I wonder if they could pull off 1080p60, and a 200Gb internal disk, and PD170-like low-light performance (I've heard pigs only fly after dusk).

  3. Maybe they do..?

But do they use Progressive or interlaced.. :)

    It's a worry.

  4. Hey Dean,

I posted this question some time ago but really didn't get a response. I'm still trying to get my head to get a handle on the issue, especially since the FX7 and the HVR-V1U are out. The Z1 and FX7 shoot in interlaced with no option to choose between the interlace or progressive. The V1U is strictly progressive. Progressive, by its nature, softens the image, creating that 'film look' yada yada yada. I have not shot in progressive before and thus have no experience with it. Why would you want to shoot in progressive for an image that is not as sharp and is known to create more artifacting than interlaced? Educate me on this please

  5. To quote Douglas Spotted Eagle in "HDV: What you need to know":

"24p is popular becasue it provides an "otherworldly" look to the picture that is clearly not refreshing as fast as our eyes see the daily picture of our lives. It doesn't appear to be slower, but also doesn't appear to have the sharp motion of daily life. Overall, 24p just doesn't have that "look" of video."

  6. 'that film look' is what we are after..Is it not..??

When you watch blockbuster movies on DVD then watch 'The making of' you can obviously see the difference before the film goes into the editors world of tricks..Take 'Into the blue' WOW !! when you look at the finished artical. When you see 'the making of' extra's the beautiful waters of the Bahama's (though still beautiful) just ain't so clear..

Give me a camera for under £4000 and editing software that can make my lovely quarry look that cool and Bingo.. Oh yeah, and if it makes me (in my Drysuit) look like Jessica Alba... Then Heh, heh, heh...Say no more.

  7. You want to look like Jessica Alba Dean? ;) Or should we be now calling you 'I'm a Lady' Deana?? :P

  8. Simon,

If I looked like Miss Alba you wouldn't get me away from a mirror, or the bathroom, or the candle shop, or the Ann summers..etc, etc.. ;)

  9. According to my latest research, the V1 has deinterlaced progressive and interlaced as an option so you can shoot in both if you like.

  10. Here is what I found out surfing around the place.

The FX1 and Z1 will still be better in low light and will have a wider FOV than the V1.

The progressive mode will be abit softer than the interlaced mode.

So that's good for the housing makers. Less chance of Vignetting.

  11. Wags, there are fewer than 12 prototypes of the HVR-V1 floating around, some of them different generations as well. So any tests etc should be taken as such.

Now where did you read that progressive was "softer" than interlace mode? I'd be interested to see who wrote such things.

  12. Wags et al

Simon Wyndham's(and Nigel Coopers) sample is a 1st generation prototype which Sony admitted had problems and the results basically conflict with what others (myself included) have seen in resolution tests. In other words, any tests regarding a 1st gen prototype vs a launched product are merely for entertainment value and cannot be taken seriously. I will accept that the controls etc have valid points as those usually don't change in production (but sometimes they do, as when the VX2100 had the PD170 iris control then went back to a 24 step control in production)

As for that thread in DVinfo, only one person actually has touched the camera and worked it. The others are merely working on conjectures and assumptions. I can't say this enough times. It's not OUT on the market yet so be patient and wait for the reviews of production models and better yet go test them personally to see if that's what you want.

  13. Just to add fuel to new cameras coming, Sony has announced for the first time a $300 rebate on the HVR-Z1U:

  14. Jesus drew,

People email me news crap like those rebates. I don't wanna know stuff like that. New cameras on the other hand...:P Jesus btw, according to Dan Brown was a nazarene. I on the other hand partially descended steppes of mongolia and Kilkenny with a bit of Moor and Gaul I believe. So Jesus Drew isn't related to me. But I really do have a cousin named Jesus (Hay zuss).

As for what you were doing... do you really want your gf to know what you were doing with the office boy in the photocopy room? And that cleaning lady from Kazakhstan in your bosses' office last friday? Or the Indian security guard in the pantry monday? And what you're doing right now? ;)
