Digital SLR Kit for U/W Photo

6 posts
  1. Hi there. I'm a beginner actually, but I'd like to start in U/W photo with the right foot. I've been using compact digital cameras for a while, and now I want to get into it seriously. I'm thinking about buying the following "kit":

    Nikon D-80

Ikelite Housing (when it becomes available)

    Nikon 60mm lens

    Sigma 10-20mm lens

    2 Sea & Sea YS-110 Strobes (New)

I need help from more experienced photographers to choose the right set. Is this a good one?

Is there a big difference between Ikelite's and Aquatica's housing, besides the greater depth? I really don't need to go deeper than 200ft.

Will these 2 lenses cover almost every situation?

What about these strobes? Does anyone know anything about them? Can they be used both for macro and wide angle shots? Is there a strobe that can be used for both macro and wide angle shots?

    Thanks! :)

  2. Hi Paulo and Welcome to Wetpixel.

You're off to a good start by asking for advice before you buy anything. I think you'll get feedback about your strobe decision. For example, if you choose Ikelite DS125 strobes, they will "talk" to the Ikelite TTL adapter in the housing and you will get automatic strobe control. This isn't something you will get if you select Sea and Sea strobes for use with this housing.

Either the DS125's or YS110's will be sufficient for both wideangle and macro.

    Sincerely,

    James Wiseman

  3. I agree with james. I would recomend Ikelite strobes on an Ikelite housing.

  4. Thanks guys! I think I'm starting to get it. Maybe this set would fit all my needs:

    Nikon D80

    Nikon 60mm lens

Tokina 12-24mm lens (much cheaper than Nikon's and fits in the 8'' Dome)

    Ikelite Housing

    8'' Dome

    Flat port w/ focus

2 DS-125 Ikelite Strobes with Ball Socket Arms and TTL Sync Cord

I think it's a pretty good set, what would you say?

    Thanks again! :)

  5. Hi Paulo,

I think a regular flat port (without manual focus) would be fine as the 60mm is almost always used in autofocus. It AF's very well. That might save you a few $$$

You'll also want to get a dual Sync Cord or two.

    Otherwise, looks good!

    Cheers

    James

  6. I just thought I'd add my thanks to those providing feedback on this forum thread... I have been toying with the idea of getting a D80 for surface photographs and thought it would be nice to use it U/W as well. This thread has been very useful to me in determining what equipment to start off with.
