Would anyone recommend any particular wide angle for the Canon 5D with the sea & sea housing and Athena dome (OPD170)? I'm thinking of the sigma 15mm. Would appreciate some thoughts....

Which Lens for Canon 5D with Athena Dome

Hi Johnny,
I don't use the Athena dome, but I've used the Seacam Superdome and the Aquatica 8" acrylic dome w/ the 5D.
The 15mm is excellent.
The 24mm F1.4 is quite good
The 17-40mm is acceptable with a good zoom range, but must be used at f8 or above
The 24-70 or 28-70 Sigmas may also work, but I haven't tested.
Cheers

James, the 24~70 is a usable 'diver' lens but lacks close enough focus to be really useful.
The 20mm Canon should be useful but its corners aren't that brilliant above water let alone below.

The Sigma 24-70 focuses pretty close.

Thanks for the advice and confirmation. I just hope my dome is large enough for the 15mm

Hi,
A dome does not have to be large for use with fisheye lenses. Ideally, it just has to be a hemisphere. Nexus sells a 4" dome for use w/ the 15mm fisheye.
As long as it doesn't vignette, it doesn't have to be big.
Cheers

I use the Athena Done OPD170 on my Nikon d200 with Nexus housing
Sigma 15mm will work fine
I use a Nikon 10,5 & 16mm without extensions and evertthing is easy and sharp!!
Other Lenses that i know that they will work are..
With a 30cm extension a Tokina 12-24
with a 40cm Extension a Nikon 12-24
With a 70 cm extension a Nikon 17-55
O.k. Its Nikon Lenses but you get the point the Done is great and suitable for alonst anything
BTW Athena is really going crazy those days.. beauce maybe they have begin to work with sea and sea they told me that the dome is not working with all those lenses
But that is just not true!!!!!!!!!
So you can easy go with a Sigma 15mm

Many Thanx James and Lambis. I appreciate your advice and i shall now go and spend some money!

At the moment all my wideangle is with the Sigma 15mm EX Fisheye on the 5D. The schooling rays in my profile are shot with this combo. That's in the Sea&Sea big dome port rather than the Athena. The Sigma is a nice short bodied lens that will fit most fisheye ports without needing any extension rings.
I've recently bought a good copy of the Canon 16-35mm, for various uses, but I'm still waiting for my zoom ring to arrive (with my YS-110s (soon please)) so I haven't tried it out yet.
It's worth noting that there is now a DG version of the Sigma, with some fancy anti reflective coatings to help in digital cameras, but I've not noticed any flair or ghosting with the non DG, EX lens.
