New Nikon D40?

  1. It made it's way out on a large german retailer's site before being pulled. Note that this is not an announced product.

This blog saved the specs and pics.

Looks nice, should be fairly cheap and it has 1/500 flash sync! Will use only AF-S lenses.

Lots of speculation over on dpReview's Nikon forum

  2. damn that nikon is sure starting to be like Canon!!

  3. Hmm, I really wonder about this one. I heard musings about it a while ago. The dealer I spoke to today had just talked to the reps, and they said nothing, but what do they ever know? With the successful teasing that Nikon did for the D-80, I think they'll use a similar tactic. Would be a nice light travel back up, but then again the 18-200VR that came up and bit me in the wallet today :D won't make any more new cameras happen any time soon.

    Cheers,

    Marli

  4. Looks like a lovely tiny camera... But it won't be much use UW or topside with my kit.

    All but one (12-24) of my lenses are screw-drive, so no 10.5, 35, 50, 60, 85, 105, 80-200, 300... Geez - I've got waaay too many lenses!! :D

  5. A few things that caught my attention:

If only AF-S lenses can be used this might just be too down market to be of serious use underwater.

Has the current D50 18-55 kit lens been redesigned. Something looks quite different?

No LCD top view and 6 MP - this is clearly not a D80 with a few things taken off.

  6. The rumours seem confirmed. Nikon seems to be catching up with the Canon trend...

There is a full review of the D40 posted on DPReview:

As suspected by TKR, the 18-55mm has been re-designed as well.

MSRP is $599, which is rather attractive for someone wanting to have a go at a DSLR, but isn't quite sure yet...

Could be interesting as a topside body to carry around when you don't want to get the big one out of its housing :guiness:

  7. Yeah Ken has got a write up on it

I like the 1/500 flash sync but it is just replacement for the d50 - mostly menu driven - 6mp. Not a serious uw player.
