Olympus d-40/epoque strobe

3 posts
  1. I have an olympus d-40/pt-12 housing. I added an Epoque manual strobe to it recently. My problem is that the small pre-flasehes set off the strobe too early. I dont see that I can set the camera to fire only one flash. Regardless of which internal flash setting I use, it always fires those little pre-flashes. I attached a fiber-optic sensor but it makes no difference.

I noticed that the strobe has 1. on/off 2.a second setting 3. and then a third "on" setting.

Have I bought a strobe that wont work with my set-up? It was quite reasonable a fires a nice bright flash that is adjustable but I noticed that Ikelites are the standard.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

  2. Hi Jeff,

Yes, that preflash can be very annoying.

I don't know too much about the Epoque strobes, however I think that some of them give you the option to set the strobe to "ignore" the preflashes and fire on the main flash. Perhaps others w/ more experience will chime in here. Which Epoque are you using?

    Cheers

    James

  3. Thanks for the reply. A setting is available on the Epoque (DS-150) that will ignore the pre-flash and I found that it fired fine last night.

My only problem now is figuring out how bright to set the flash for different distances. I noticed that cloe in objects require much less as opposed to objects at distance. Being a manual slave strobe made it less expensive but I can see how nice something more automatic might be.

Any ideas or rules of thumb to use when firing a manual strobe or is it just practice?

    Thanks again.

We are off to Bonaire in early March so I need to get with now.
