Groovy video transition from B&W to color?

8 posts
  1. Does anyone have a slick technique to transition from black and while to color video within the same clip in Final Cut Pro? I am looking to start a Wreck of the Rhone (if anyone knows it) piece in black and white and then smoothly move into color. Any input would be appreciated

  2. Very groovy!

    (P.S. I've got one and it's really good at e-mail) :)

  3. Kinda like this ?

    BW transition

Transition is quick to match the music, but can be slower if necessary.

I did it the beginner way. Cut a clip in half, made 1 in color, the other in BW. Did a cross disolve timed with the music.

  4. IONature,

Put your clip on the time line and then just source the desaturation filter from the image control effects section. The clip will be administered as black and white once you set the value of destauration to 100. Set a key frame on the timeline in the effects box and decrease the amount of desaturation to 0 and your clip will return to its original color. You can set whatever time delay on the effect timeline required for this "transition".

Key frames are added, or subtracted, by clicking the small diamond shaped node to the right of the effects value dialogue box.

  5. Thanks Mark! I'm looking for something a little less straight forward, what else have you got in your bag of tricks? Maybe with swirls or crazy lights or something!!!???

  6. IONature,

If you have either Motion, Shake or LiveType you can create overlay elements to jazz up the sequence. You will basically be creating a motion background to incorporate over your existing track. If you have none of these three software programs you can also create additional elements in Photoshop.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  7. Ionature, Mark's suggestion to simply keyframe a desat filter is the best and easiest transition that will remain both neutral and natural. However, if it is fancy lights etc you are seeking, get yourself Knolls Light Factory. It is fairly easy to use, works in FCP or AE and will create almost any light effect you are seeking.
