What's the difference in these Ikelite trays?

4 posts
  1. Hi guys,

Is there any structural difference between the following Ikelite trays?

    1. Tray for Canon, Fuji etc compact housing #9523.01

    2. Tray for Olympus housing #9523.31

    3. Tray for Ikelite compact housing #9523.32

    3. Tray for ikelite DSLR housing

Can I get the DSLR tray to use with my compact camera housing?

The reason is because i'm shopping for a strobe set-up for my compact camera, while keeping in mind that I will eventually house my DSLR so I'm hoping to get something that can stay with me.

I've looked at the ULCS trays and they don't seem to make the distinction between use for compacts or DSLRs. Would ULCS be a better choice then?

Appreciate any help in this matter! Thanks in advance.

The small digicam trays won't be of much use for a DSLR housing, but the Ikelite housings come with trays anyway. In fact most DSLR housings have integral arm mounting points or accept ULCS or equivalent ball ends. The tray thing is becoming largely a compact digicam thing only.

I'd focus most of your attention on the features and ergonomics of any housing, tray or arm system. The ULCS stuff is superbly made and they offer buoyancy arm segments which can be very useful to trimming a dense DSLR rig. See the umpteen threads on buoyancy.

    HTH and good luck,

  3. Martyn,

The ULCS digital tray is for the smallest of the Ikelite housings, The middle size does not work on any of our trays; so we are designing a new tray for this. The current longer tray works for the DSLR trays; but is a tad too thick so we are also working on this.

All DSLR housings of IKes come with a tray and handles, don't think you have the option of not getting it. The small housings I think you have the option of not getting their tray. YOu can use our TR-D, but it fits best if turned upside down and then we supply the 12/24 screws that you need to attach it to the housing.

It is best turned upside down so you can unlatch the latches without them hitting the handle. Works well.

  4. Hi Martyn and Terry,

    Thanks for your quick replies!

Didn't realise Ikelite DSLR housings come with their own tray and handles. I guess this pretty much solves my 'upgrading' problem.

I've a couple of friends using the UCLS tray and arm system, and I'm pretty impressed with the ease of use. Looks like its UCLS for me and my compact since its easily available locally (i'm in singapore)

    Thanks again!
