Diving in Okinawa

  1. Has anybody done much diving in Okinawa? Thinking of going in the summer next year, but have not been able to find out much about it on the internet. I was told it's generally boat dives, but then I read about shore dives and climbing steps with dive gear etc Any reputable dive operators you can recommend who are also keen underwater photographers/videographers there?

  2. I spent 2 years diving Okinawa heavily in the mid 80s. Almost exclusively beach dives. You could then reach a number of world class reefs from shore. Be sure to get coral booties.

Hedo point (northern most point), suicide cliffs (southern most point), and many points in-between. No longer sure about the spellings or locations.

The Keramas can be done as a day trip or you can stay their. Excellent diving. I haven't dove some of the further sites that make to news in recent years.

So I can't give you any good recent info but I would say there should be some excellent diving. I have considered going back myself. Let us know how the diving is if you go.

  3. Fathoms is still the better gaijin ops although Rick Ruth is now in Yonaguni. Personally, the diving was kinda barren for the money, unless you hit Yonaguni or Bonin where the big animals and "possible" ancient sites are the highlights.

Shore diving is a lot of work for the better sites in Okinawa. You'd get better diving in the Philippines for 1/3 the price.

  4. Thanks for the tips!
