Maldives alternate island

To my great annoyance, I've just been informed I've been bumped from my chosen holiday destination of Vakarufahli and have been given a choice of Meeru or Veligandu. You can take as read just how utterly p***** off I am about this and how this is not a great start to my luxury island paradise holiday!

I've been offered an alerternative of either Meeru or Veligandu. Does anyone have experience of either island or recommend one or the other? Or should we be asking for a full refund?

How can you be bumped from an Island or vacation?

I don't have an informed answer (I'm sure one will be along soon though) - but I have been bumped just about every trip to the Madives!!! The reasons given were varied; but my impression was that, sooner than have two 'half empty' islands, the operators will fill one & close the other.

I cannot say this has resulted in a 'poorer' deal in my experience, as I was not abe to compare; but I thnk that there was not too much difference in what I'd booked & what I actually got, bearing in mind that most diving was done away from the host island.

Not been to either island but the reason we have not been to meeru is because it doesnt have its own house reef. we like to do unlimited diving and if there are only two boats a day you cannot get in much diving, if you go to a resort with a house reef you can drop in whenever you wish.

just something else you may wish to look into before making your decision.

Good luck - i can thoroughly recommend Kuredu and Vilamendoo if you get given those as options tho.

I have been to Maldives several times. Try with Maayafushi Resort Island, you have Maaya Thila one of the best dive points in all Maldives as your house reef.

Vakarufahli is a nice island, in a good area (south Ari Atoll). If you want to stay in that area then White Sands is a also good choice, or Machchafushi (Vakarufahli's neighbour). If you are going between late Dec and April, then you are in Manta season, and South Ari has one of the best Manta points, so I'd take this into consideration depending on where they are bumping you off to.

Reasons for moving are normally due to overbooking - every tour operator will have an allotment of rooms they can sell, but sometimes the total of all the allotments will exceed the number of rooms available on the island.

My advice is do your research on the alternates they offer and don't settle for anyting you are unhappy with - the tour operator will not worry about the quality of diving from an island, but I can vouch that Vakarufahli is in a good location (I lived next door to it for nearly 3 years)
