This is a fascinating article! Very well written, quite moving, and has a lot of technical details (which seem to be pretty accurate for a change) about this rebreather oriented diving fatality. It's a long article, but I highly recommend it. If you or any friends are diving on rebreathers, it's especially interesting and controversial.

  4. As you read, Zak was an energetic and fun guy. A great diver and he did some amazing things. Unfortunately he wasn't always the best disciplined diver, and you have to be very, very disciplined to dive these things.

Gees, another rebreather incident last week in Lake Washington, where the guy went down and did an emergency ascent and embolized. Still alive apparently. Police recovered gear, but it was flooded, they're continuing to investigate.

I have other friends that dive the Meg with no issues, many 1,000s of dives are on them.

  5. Trouble is Jack they only need to go wrong the once.

  6. Yes, CO2 will kill you before you know it's there.

But they do have bail-outs and they are supposed to have the training to deal with situations. In fact, it's included with the purchase of the Meg.

I think RB require extra skills and experience that you can't get from training. Zak did some dumb stuff, things he knew better about. And yup, that one time led to a series of things going wrong, which is always the way fatalities occur.

His loss is still upsetting. I think about it and i hope it makes me a safer diver.
