However, I find it a bit sad to see that in quite alot of the model shots, the model is actually holding on to the reef or sitting down.

Since I dived at Sipadan I'm using one of these metal pointer stick. I think it's a more reef-friendly solution for those moments you want to be in a certain position (if properly used of course).....if one has to touch at all.
