Planning a trip to Los Barriles In Late May

2 posts
  1. I'm planning a trip to Los Barriles to stay at Martin Verdugo's Beach Resort and dive with Vista Sea Sport this May. I'm hoping to dive Cabo Pulmo and some of the sea lion sites. Maybe try to photograph a whale-shark.

Los Barriles is on the east cape of Baja between Cabo and La Paz. Its fairly close to Cabo Pulmo. If the diving isn't good there I can always drive into La Paz or Cabo as I understand its only an hour either way. My parents are crazy about the area. This year they plan to stay with their RV from March-June, so I'm timing my trip to coincide with theirs. They like it so much that afterwards they plan to keep their trailer down there and my dad already has a 15' aluminum boat in storage. Maybe I'll just dive from that.

Has anyone been down there? Any experience with the weather this time of year?

  2. I dove Cabo Pulmo in August. It's very nice. Lots of colorful seafans and massive schools of fish. It exceeded my expectations, however I think 2 days is enough unless you get some manta, shark, or whaleshark encounters.

The drive into Cabo Pulmo is about a 10 mile dirt road. If you intend to do more than one day of diving, I recommend staying there. I've also stayed at Martin Verdugo's and I don't think you would want to drive back and forth. Getting a place to stay should be easy in Cabo Pulmo. We drove up and rented our own bungalow with kitchen. Be mindful that electricity is either generator or solar so charge your batteries whenever you can.

If you don't know the dive sites, it's worth getting the guide as they will put you into the massive schools of fish.

btw - both areas are beautiful. However Los Barriles is full of gringo snobs. hope that helps.
