Just in time for summer –well winter where most of you are– UWSMAS is a new society launched this morning to study the relationship between two of the underwater world's fiercest competitors; photographers and videographers.
UWSMAS (pronounced ooowwsmasss) the UnderWater Shooters Mutual Admiration Society will study the unique properties of the UnderWater Shooters (with the eventual aim to determine if they are actually different species; two sub-species and/or; if some individuals (mutations maybe?) can actually have some characteristics of both types.
The society was created after a forum post on Wetpixel was hijacked by camera-wielding extremists from both side of the abyss. The need for the society was first prompted by this comment from rebreatherdave, in response to some excellent macro images by herbko, and innocent bystander in the debate:
One of the things I envy about still shooters is you don't need to keep yourself as still as us videographers do....
this was followed by a lightning response from a still photographer (still photgraphers need lightning reflexes you see)
One of the things I envy about videographers is that you don't need to get as close as we photographers do and you don't need as much light...
and this
One thing I envy about you videographers is that each frame you shoot doesn't have to be perfect.
and this
one thing i envy about photographers...strobes are cheaper than lights....
and even this
Each frame does not have to be perfect..Pah !! Maybe to some, but not yours truly...Thats why it takes me so long to film anything... :glare:
Although outwardly unbiased, founder UWSMAS, Photovan, was heard to whisper
"It seems the competitve nature of the two types was established around 1895, when (some 60 YEARS after still photography was invented) the first attempts were made to simplify the noble art of still photography into something the everyday person could understand."
Membership to the Society is free any contribution to the debate is welcome.
Have fun and keep smiling...
