Plumose Anenome

  1. A few more pictures from British Columbia. I'm now using a Q40 light mounted to the top of the housing to aid in focusing and it seems to help. I'm happy with how crisp the high res images turned out. Settings were M shutter1/125, F 4-8.

Still trying to get the hang of strobe positioning.... does anyone use a spotting aid to position their strobes such as a small light or laser? Whats a newbie to do?

As always, continue to learn & appreciate your tips and comments.

  2. CJ there appears to a problem with your web link. It would be particularly useful to see your pics as a few of us are diving Port Hardy in Aug this year.

  3. CJ, some very nice pics there. Did you take all the pics with the same f/s settings or were you in P mode? Did you catch any wolf eels?

Looking at the variety of life here I can't wait to get out there in Aug.

  4. Thanks Mark,

I was in M mode, with the shutter @ 1/125 and the F @ 8 mostly. (I'm at work so I dont have my info available).

Didnt have the luck with the wolfeels this time. One diver said he saw 2 of them crammed in a den but we couldnt find them.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the trip and the area I was at pales in comparison to Port Hardy. You'll be amazed.

If you Port Hardy trip divers will be congregating in Vancouver for a day or two maybe I could meet up with you.

  5. I looked at your website, and you've got some really nice photos there. My suggestion for this image would be to practice the rule of thirds, as this photo is a classic bullseye - the subject dead center in the frame. The target's shape accentuates this even further.

The other shots on your site don't really have that problem, though. With the anenomes in particular you've successfully framed the subjects very creatively, and you seem to have a very good feel for complementary backgrounds.

You've got a great eye for photography, and a great place to practice it in.

  6. Thanks so much Kasey. Yes I'm very lucky to be living here so close to wonderful dive sites...as cold as they may be!

Funny, I was going to crop that pic a bit differently but I just loved all of the different things going on in there. I'll spend more time on it exploring some interesting compositions.

    This is a bit better....

  7. Nice shots

Another point to improve, in some of the shots the main subject is cut, not all of it in the frame. For instance: the stars tentacle.

  8. If you Port Hardy trip divers will be congregating in Vancouver for a day or two maybe I could meet up with you.

We will be staying in Vancouver for a day or so before the diving. We want to check out the place before we fly on to Port Hardy. Here we will be bear spotting for a day too, prior to boarding the dive boat. Perhaps you could email your contact details to me nearer the time and we could certainly share a beer or two. It looks like we will be getting flights to Vancouver on the 20th Aug, but will confirm later.

I'm not sure I did the quote thing above correctly but I'm also interested in knowing whether anyones uses spotting aids.

  10. Newbibranch, some nice pics there.

Re: rule of thirds and your application on the modified picture you've posted (Feb 12 2003, 06:48 AM) - in this case you might want to try cropping from the other side. Since the subject is facing right to left cropping from the right to get the point of interest to the rule of thirds will give the subject some 'room to breathe' with the negative space (in this case the black) on the left. Hope that makes sense!

  11. Thanks all for the feedback & tips.

    >ReyeR ...Yup makes sense.

    >Markh ...great, closer to the Port Hardy trip I'll email you.

    >TedJ ...I guess we'll have to ask this question again in the "lighting" forum

  12. Nice, standard camera lens or did you use the 19 mm lens.

  13. These pics were just with the standard lens.
