Two weeks ago I was on a short dive trip to Puerto Vallarta. We only had time for 6 dives. On the first 5, I had the 17-40 lens on in hopes of seeing some pelagics. I almost never have clear enough water in the Channel Islands to use it. After 5 disappointing dives, I thought I would return from this trip with nothing usuable.
On the last dive, I put on my 100mm macro lens. Conditions were great. The visibility was forever and I was busy shooting some green and zebra morays, when three enormous mantas came crusing by! I guess I hit the magic incantation to make them appear. I had to settle for head shots. Even so I had to back up a fair bit to get a recognizable portrait. Doesn't it always happen that way?
The rest of the trip is something of a story in itself, but I will leave that for a future thread.
I can just picture you treading water backwards to get the shot. Great shot, nice composition - one for the wall I think.

Murphy strike again
Great image, love it for it unusually.
I love the way his eye is looking back at me. I really got the sence that he was checking me out.
hey, nice image!
very crisp too
Well, I think it proves that you're able to adapt to the situation, use what you have and come up with something creative. Fantastic shot!
