Sea & Sea iTTL Converter Test

  1. I thought that I would add this as a new post instead of adding it the post below. I finally got around to doing a topside test with my Subal / D200 / Inon Z240 system.

I would say that the results are pretty good. The f8's at all 3 SS are a little light.

  2. Dave,

I have a similar set up on the way to me at the moment - so an interesting set of results. Do you have results for wider apertures too?

Since I was just testing its macro capabilities, I elected to stay in the range that I did (actually f8 was a wider than I would use).

I'm "trying" to test the Sea and Sea TTL unit out on wider apertures/wide angle with lots of ambient light, to see how it does, spent 12 hours u/w trying but had 2 bad converters from a bad batch - we find now. When I get a converter unit that works I'll let everyone know my experiences. (I hear Ryan Canon has another "working" TTL unit off to me as I type here..., great service!)

Still too I won't use too much below f8 either because of focusing issues with the dome/16mm.

  5. Hi,

With i-TTL2 converter + 2xZ220, I am finding little dark on f22 & f32 but, above test shown even lighting on f32. I guess Z240 has more power & fast recycle.

    Carol,

Re focusing on 16mm, I never used Subal dome port but, you may want to remove filter from back side of lens & test UW & see how it work. In my experiance, it gives better short distance focusing when filter is removed. On shore, you have to have filter for infinity focusing.

Thanks Sam. I thought about removing the filter but then I pretty much nix my chances with manatee when I want to distance focus on them too?

I was having trouble with CFWA on the manatee, then Ryan Canon suggested I lock-focus on my hand about 12" in front of dome or so - flip to manual focus and everything around that distance to about 3 feet should be in focus. But he did specify I had to use f8 or higher. It worked like a charm, whiskers sharp as a tack!! (I'll post soon). But I also think it wasn't locking focus also because of rainbow light rays dancing around on the manatees snouts....... , the manual focus handled that too, lovely. Now I'm having trouble with distance focusing. Regardless I don't seem to do well at apertures much under f8 with the 16/dome. But that is the subject for another post.... ;)

I received a new Sea and Sea TTL unit on Monday but I'm waiting to try it out after the holidays, places get too crowded for my tastes around Xmas/New Years.

    Will keep you all posted...

    Thanks!!!!!

  7. This seems to be the right forum where to find an answer for my doubts.

I own a Nikon d200 and I' m planning to buy an housing. I think I will go with Hugyfot since I already have a complete set of ports of this brand. To get the ittl capabilities with my S&S YS 120 strobes, I was also planning to get either the ittl converter from Heinrichs or the similar but most pratcal S&S external one . Here are my doubts.

    1) The Heinrichs ittl converter seems to be not working with the Ys 120 and Nikon D200 (Matthias confirmed by note ) while the S&S does. Sounds strange to me since, as far as I know, they use the same circuit !

    2) Does anybody tried the S&S ittl converter with Hugy D200. Does it work ? S&S states that their converter only works with S&S houings.

    Really hope somone can help

  8. Hi,

    1. I tested my YS-120duo with S&S ittl converter2 (w/ Nexus D200 housing) & it works(so far...). YS-120 is listed as workable strobe at S&S Website.

2.I am not familier with Hugy sync socket but, i-ttl converter requires all 5 pins of socket to be connected with camera( Some housing has only 2 pins connected). As long as it is all connected(correctly..), it should work. Mounting the converter on Hugy handle is another issue though....
