Strobes for S2 Aquatica Setup and Deep Wreck Shots
4 posts
I have recently purchased an Aquatica S2 Housing and am looking for a twin strobe set up to run with an 8" dome port and 10-20 Sigma.
The work I am looking at doing is down to 60m and either atmospheric wreck shots or close in survey work (unidentified ship project in 52-54m off Weymouth).
I was looking at the YS110 but someone mentioned SS200 and I also notice that Alan James has YS90 TTL Duo for £159 each. Is it worth getting 2 x YS90 now and see how I get on, wait for some SS200 to come up on Ebay (battery issues?) or plump for the YS110?
The housing has been modified with the following cables inside if that makes any difference.
The Nikonos bulkheads are not the original ones from Aquatica. I replaced them by German ones from Subtronics. They have spring loaded pins so they are 100% compatible with Ikelite cables. German Nikonos sync cables [usually made for fixed pins] can be used. I did use such cables with my housed SB800.
-Secondly, the wiring configuration of the bulkheads was soldered and done by myself. This was to avoid once and for all the problems I was having with wires breaking lose inside the bulkhead that I had with the Aquatica. It is set-up so that you can use either the 1st or the 2nd bulkead as the primary for redundancy, therefore you don't get stuck in the middle of the liveaboard and if you have a split cable you still can use 2 strobes from a primary bulkhead.

I've had great success shooting close focus wide angle (as well as macro and fish portraits) with the Sustrobe 200. They put out over twice the light of the other strobes you are considering, and have 4 power levels (full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8) that should be adequate for what you need. They are often available on eBay, in fact, I just got one as a back-up (including a spare battery) for $200, a great deal as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks arcatus.
So, anyone know of anyone selling a pair of SS200's (Ebay is clear at the moment)
I will have a chat with Alan James and see if knows of any that might be coming up. I need to speak to him about arms and other stuff too!

I have 2 SS 200's that have not been in the water for 6 years or so. One of them is practically unused, and the other one has lots of dives, and still in perfect function. Used with N90s & Ike housing.
