Nuweiba in January??

6 posts
  1. I need to take a few underwater pictures in January! But I don't want to go away for too long, and I am strongly considering a week in Red Sea. For a change I'd like to go shore based, and I am favouring Nuweiba because I haven't been there before and it is a perenial favourite with many Brit UW photographers.

Does anyone have any contacts or recommendations for the area (dive centres, hotels etc)?

Also how much wetsuit should I take - remembering the tight baggage allowance on the flights?!

And finally, does anyone want to come along? Give me a shout if you do and I'll let you know the dates when I have booked something (which won't be until after Christmas).

  2. Hi Alex

I love the comment 'I need to take a few underwater pictures in January' :D:D

I have stayed at the Hotel Coral Hilton which is on the outskirts of Nuweiba, which has it's own house reef. Now, 'hotel house reef' usually conjures up some pretty negative images; but not this one. It is a photographers dream!!!!

Despite being quite small, the reef hosts an amazing variety of marine life, with numerous cleaning stations -

    - and lots of octopus!

In addition there is a jetty, with coral encrusted legs and lots of life there too.

The on-site dive centre organise daily trips out to other sites, but to be honest I stayed on the house reef/jetty for the whole week I was there and never got bored. In fact, it was a great aid to my learning to be able to return to the same spot repeatedly to practice with the same subject matter.

If you'd like more info give me a call; and yes, I would love to join you in January!!!

    Regards

    Ralph

PS Wetsuit, I use a 5mm full length in the Red Sea Jan/Feb & which suits me fine.

  3. Spooky!

Just opened my January copy of Dive, only to find a report on Nuweiba - which features the Coral Hilton house reef, Abou Lou Lou.

  4. Thanks Ralph.

It is a pity that my dates don't work out for you. I don't seem to get Dive Magazine anymore! Bit of a cheek considering I am a contributing ed! I never even got a subscription reminder!

I guess I will buy a copy in the Airport on Friday - nice bit of inflight reading.

A pity indeed that the dates didn't work; but if I tried to cancel my trip to Venice I can only imagine my wife's reaction

    Have a good trip!

  6. I just can back from Ismailia, Egypt on the 1st of January and it was quite cool and windy, so the Nuwieba should be about the same. I suspect you will want to take the 5 mm suit.

When my wife and I were there for the small Eid, we stay at a place called Castle Beach in the area of Ras Sheitan. It is small place with huts on the beach and is 18 kms north of Nuweiba. There was one dive guide named Abdullah at the camp; who is very nice and has been diving in the area for 20 years. The cost per dive was 20$. We had our own transportation and not sure how that will factor into costs.

Sidenote: Dont be exiting the water when the ferry to Jordan comes by; the waves were breaking at about 4 foot.
