Lembeh and Raja Ampat photos

  1. I just got a gallery up on my website with shots from my recent Lembeh/Raja Ampat trip:

    Lembeh & Raja Ampat Nov-Dec 2006 GALLERY

I tried out some new lens/TC combinations on this trip, and I'll post comments about those later in appropriate forums.

  2. Nice shots Bruce -- where's the flamboyant cuttlefish?

PS Yeah, I know, right next to the blue-ringed octopus!

    Mike,

The flamboyant cuttlefish (which I hadn't seen before, including last year's trip) was somewhere at Lembeh, but I can't remember which site (sorry). I also saw my first wonderpus on this trip, but didn't get a decent photo (everyone was mobbing around it in a cloud of Lembeh silt). The 2 harlequin shrimp were also a first for me - they were at the police dock. Other than that, it was lots of the "same old stuff!" :(:D

P.S. Oops - I just realized that the flamboyant cuttlefish didn't make it into the gallery...which means you were'nt asking a serious question, but were making fun of the fact that I hadn't seen one yet! :D I'll go remedy that right now!

P.P.S. OK, now it's in there - it's the second photo in the gallery!

  8. Hi Bruce,

I wonder, do you sell a lot of photos through your website ?

    Alex,

No, not a lot, but I've never really "tried." The primary reason I set the site up using Smugmug's "Pro" membership (which allows people to order prints online) is because I had a number of people I know wanting to buy prints of some of my photos. In the time I've had the site up (less than a year), I've had people buy maybe 200 photos altogether, and all but a handful have been people I know personally. IOW, I've only made a few hundred dollars "profit" (which gets donated to charity, along with proceeds from the calendar I produced of my uw images).

Bear in mind that I'm not trying to make money with my photos. I've never submitted a single image to any magazines, etc. for publication, and haven't tried to "market" my photos at all. Every penny I've gotten from selling photos to date has gone to charity. There are lots of true pros here on Wetpixel who can give you ideas on how to sell your photos - they actually make a living doing so. From what I understand, it takes some real time/work to get your photos "out there" where potential buyers/publications see and want them. For me, this is just a very expensive hobby/obsession, and I'm glad I don't need to do that to pay the bills...

  10. Thanks for the reply Bruce.... certainly takes the pressure off and lets the creative juices flow by the look of your wonderful photos !!

  11. Hey Bruce,

I was out that way at a very similar time. Met lots of photographers during my travels - pity I didn't bump into you (or maybe you saw me coming...).

I really wanted to go to Lembeh too, but editor wouldn't let me! It is rubbish doing this professionally... I love shooting critters and I haven't been to N. Sulawesi (except en route to Sorong) for nearly 3 years. :-(

I wish we'd run into each other again, too, Alex! Next time you are in that area, I'd suggest you really try to spend some time at Lembeh. You'll notice a LOT more dive boats there than the last time you were there -- still lots of critters, but the area is receiving tons more diving pressure, so if you wait 3 MORE years, it may have deteriorated significantly...

  13. Bruce, love the emperor shrimp on the nudi!!!

BTW, can you put me down on your charity list? Got some u/w camera accesories I need to buy soon... :D j/k
