Sigma 18-50 F2.8 EX DC macro

  1. This new mid range zoom looks interesting. The cose focus ability looks better than the older version and I like the F2.8 aperture through the range. It's badged as an EX lens too which is suppopsed to denote better build.

I've had a look at the Sigma 17-70 but have found it awkward to house due to how much the lens physically extends when zooming. Perhaps the 18-50 would be easier.

Has anyone tried this one yet - any thoughts?

I've only tried the non macro version of this lens (18-50 EX f/2.8) and was pretty impressed with it behind a dome. In fact, looking back at some of my photos, the Sigma looks as good as if not better than my Canon 10-22mm shots at the @18-22mm range. Makes a nice utility lens under a dome from 18mm wide to fish portraits at 30-50mm.

some samples from Apo Island, Philippines shot with the Sigma 10-50 EX (non macro model), Canon 350D, Athena Dome +40mm ext., S&S housing. No diopter. I can only image the macro would be even better with its close distance focusing!
