Need S. Pacific island dive destination - Fiji, Palau, etc.

  1. I'll be attending a business conference in Hawaii in May, and my wife (only a few dives under her belt) has agreed to accompany me on a "dive trip" from there to somewhere with warmer water and nicer reefs, etc. I'd really like to go somewhere where she can experience great, easy diving (in hopes that she'll want to start accompanying me on more dive trips). She'll probably only do one or two dives a day, but it's a start...

Thus, I'm open to all South Pacific island destinations that have some really nice hotels (e.g., Hyatt or Westin caliber), warm (i.e., 80+ degree) water, good reefs, and are accessable to/from Hawaii. That rules out the Solomons, PNG, etc.

ANY ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Bruce,

You may want to try the Shangri la Hotel in Cebu, Philippines. The reputation of the Shangri la Group of Hotels is unsurpassed and they have a nice house reef and are close to decent diving.

Their in-house dive center is top notch as well. They used to do a day trip out to Malapascua Island where the Thresher Sharks can be found.

  3. Palau and the Palau Pacific Resort

Yap and the Manta Ray Bay Hotel

    Tahiti

  4. Thanks for the suggestions, but I decided on Fiji, most likely staying at the Westin. I was able to work out nonstop flights from/to Honolulu, and the diving should be nice. Besides, I've never been to Fiji, and want to see if the diving is as beautiful as I've heard! B)
