3 CMOS chip versus 3 CCD chip?

8 posts
  1. I hear Sony is coming out with a high definition video camera that will have 3 chips, but they will be CMOS chips.

What does everyone think the image quality and clairty will be compared to a 3 CCD chip high definition camera? ( I hope I have my electronic thingy names right).

Or has anyone compared a single standard definition CCD chip to a single standard defintion CMOS chip camera, or do such combinations not exist?

    Thanks guys! ;)

  2. Hi and welcome to wetpixel.

No one has taken a 3CCD CMOS underwater yet that we know of so you may just have to wait abit for an answer on that.

Our single CMOS and 3CCD HDV cameras do put out a different image but you cannot compare a single to a 3CCD camera. We have found that the 3 CCD FX1 is operating a few fstops higher than the single A1 CMOS at the same depth and same shutter speed with a URPRO filter in.

  6. Welcome "iDiveChick" (sorry, didn't see your name),

Having shot with both CMOS and CCD, i am hesitant to place high expecations on the 3CMOS. I expect it will be noticably better than the 1CMOS, but not confident it will match the pace of the 3CCD. I assume you are referring to the V1/FX7. If this is the case, i believe you are also talking about smaller sensors than the Z1/FX1. That unto itself will put it at a disadvantage.

There is lively discussion regarding the CMOS vs CCD in the pinned topic above (Sony HDR-FX7 / HVR-V1). Read it to your hearts content. It would be useful if you could share with us the model of cameras and which housings you are considering. Also, more info on the kind of shooting you will be doing and for what purpose (recreation, scientific, projects, broadcast). Finally, the locations you are shooting in (lots of light vs low light). These factors will impact the importance of differences in performance.

Finally, ignore the not-so-discrete remarks of any wacky brits wondering about this forum (eh dean;)), the queene made them that way:)

    again, welcome
