Who to dive with in Fiji?

  1. I'll be spending 5 days in Fiji (most likely at the Nadi Westin), so will only have 4 days to dive.

Since my wife (a VERY occasional diver - only about 5 dives since certification 10 years ago) will be with me, and I want her to enjoy herself (so she wants to dive MORE), I'd like the best possible dive operation that is likely to take the best possible care of us (i.e., small groups, no cattle boats, will tailor the dive sites to her skill level, etc.). Any ideas?!

I've never been to Fiji before, so any input would be GREATLY appreciated!

  2. Hi Bruce,

Sorry but I don't know much about diving on the South Coast. When Eric and I were there we dove up at Raki Raki with Kai Viti divers and it was excellent. They are about a 2 hr drive from Nadi though. They had a good guide and a nice fast planing jet boat.

    Cheers

    James

  3. Bruce;

I echo James's experience the north coast is better, but longer boat rides.

From Nadi, probably the closest is go back around past Suva and do something in Bequa Lagoon. There are some fairly good deals to be had there and it is more protected with shorter boat rides. A guy I dive with at the Aquarium really likes it there.

I'd contact Donna at South Pacific Island travel here in Seattle, she really knows Fiji and can set you up.

    Cheers,

    Jack

I'd also highly recommend Kai Viti divers and the Wananavu Resort up there. The diving is spectacular out of Raki Raki and the service is terrific. They'll come get you in Nadi..it's 2 1/2 hour up there but, IMHO, much better than the Nadi area.

Thanks, everybody, for your suggestions. After looking into it, I'm seriously considering staying at Wananavu Resort and Kai Viti Divers instead of staying in Nadi. From what I can gather, Wananavu is about the nicest resort up on that North coast (right?), and it appears that the diving is MUCH better up there...

It depends on what you are interested in:

Great articles, John! If I were going by myself, or with some of my experienced dive buddies, I would undoubtedly be looking at the shark dives and/or spending time up at Taveuni. But as my original post mentioned, this trip is centered around getting my wife (with only a few dives--and no really good experiences--under her belt) in the water with some beautiful corals and fish...and doing it while staying at as nice a resort as possible--on Vitu Levu, where no additional flights are required to get there. Thus, for THIS trip (hopefully there'll be many more!) the north coast of Vitu Levu looks like about our best bet. Do you know of any other nice (or nicER) resorts up there than Wananavu?

  8. my wife and i were at wananavu resort last year. The resort is beautiful. We had a beachfacing bungalo. It was a short walk to kai viti divers. They try to go to bligh waters, were the best diving is, but it depends in part on conditions,as it is about an hour trip. My only disapointment was that they do 2 morning dives but no afternoon dives unless they have 'enough' people, and unfotunately they never did when we were there. I snorkeled on the house reef but it was very uninteresting. You cant do better then bligh waters for spectacular reefs and crystal clear waters. I think I posted some pics several months ago here

  9. I agree: Kai Viti Divers rock.

I went to Taveuni in 2004 and really didn't enjoy the diving. Reefs were in poor condition, but maybe we just went to the wrong places.

The shark dives at Beqa are fun, too, but you have to like the big feed thing...
