Dual mismatched strobes: DS-125 and SB-105?

6 posts
  1. I have been shooting with a D70s in an Ikelite housing with a DS-125 on both iTTL and manual. I recently realized that I had an old SB-105 laying around the house doing nothing and even an extra set of Ikelite strobe arms so I may as well upgrade to dual strobes.

Before I purchase the sync cord to connect my Ikelite housing to one DS-125 and one SB-105 ( http://www.helixcamera.com/uw/ikelite/ikea...kesync-ike.html ) I would like to ask if anyone can share their experience... good or bad... shooting with dual strobes with one being an Ikelite and one being Nikonos on either iTTL or manual? Are there any technical reasons why I should not pursue this setup? Also, what are your thoughts on using the SB-105 as a slave strobe with this setup? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Hi Chris

I'm still fairly new to this but I definitely prefer dual strobes. Definitley get the sync cord instead of slaving it (unless you want to place the stobe away from the camera for some intruiging lighting senarios...)

I have dual SB-105's and for wide angle you'll want the diffusers attached. This is a problem becuse the diffuser covers the slave sensor and it's near impossible to trigger the sensor. I used to have a lot of trouble with this, removing the diffuser and getting hot spots in my pics.

I love the ability to add fill light at 1/2 power from the second strobe, lighting is more dynamic. Especially for macro. Tis more work, but fun to play with. Enjoy,

  3. Don't think you will be able to use the e-TTL function anymore, unless the SB105 strobe is switched off.

  4. I am not sure the TTL function would work with the 105.

I think your best bet would be to contact Ikelite direct for this question as i am not sure what effect having one TTL strobe and one non TTL strobe will do to your existing TTL ability.

I also agree that it is better to have the 105 hard wired rather than slaved.

I would suggest trying both strobes on manual and go from there

I called Ikelite today and they confirmed that iTTL would not work with the 105. Furthermore they discontinued the sync cord for this. I may try shooting with the 105 as a slave strobe until I can save up for my 2nd DS-125.

Thanks for all your replies everyone.

  6. Chris,

Only way you will be able to get the SB105 slave to fire is to put your HOUSING in Manual mode, effectively disabling any TTL function with your DS125. All manual flash settings.

Seems like a waste of the functionality of the housing and DS125 to me. Plus the recycle time of the SB105 is pathetically slow compared to your DS125.

My advice would be to sell the SB105, and buy even a DS51 for fill with dual cord. Or another DS125 :P

    Good luck!
