Nikon D70s lenses and Ikelite ports

8 posts
  1. Hi Guys and Gals.... Newbie here...

I have a question about Ikelite ports for my Nikon D70s

I have 2 lenses, the Nikkor 18-70 and the Sigma 10-20

It is possible to use 1 6" lense port to accomodate both lenses?

The lense port for the 18-70 is the Ikelite 5503.55

The lense port for the 10-20 is the Ikelite 5503.51

Can one of the above lense ports accomodate both? They are both 6" domes.

    Appreciate the help...

    Thanks...

    Anwar

  2. Hello,

If you use the 18-70 in the 5503.51 port the lens will hit the dome when its fully extended. The Sigma 10-20 would end with corners cut off at the 10mm end and possibly fully extended too. You really do need both ports.

    Hope that helps

  3. also, check the port table at ikelite's wb page: the diameter of the 10-20 sigma is too large to fit a zoom gear, so your stuck at one focal length setting

  4. Hi Anwar, Stephen is correct, and that's one disadvantage of Ikelite housings. There is no extension ring system like the other manufacturers, so you can't just add an extension to the shorter port. There are a few options if you were using their new 8'' dome, but I don't think you can use the 10-20 with that dome.

  5. according to the Ike website its a no go with the Sigma 10-20 and the 8" dome

  6. Anwar (and other amigos),

The Sigma 10-20mm is one of those "odd" lenses that despite being a 77mm thread size has such a fat barrel it is impossible to get a zoom ring assembly inside the fixed Ikelite port barrels or 8" dome port extensions.

Here's the Nikon AF lenses Ikelite ports can accommodate:

I sure wouldn't say it's a limiting system. I also never will understand why people buy a lens before checking if a port is specified for it first. I have a few Canon shooter friends using the Sigma 10-20mm, and ANY wide zoom like this will be sharpest a bit zoomed in from the full wide 10mm setting.

My Canon 10-22mm lens was sharpest at 12mm. So setting a wide angle zoom at one angle and concentrating on the image (and "zooming" with your fins) isn't really that limiting IMHO...

Personally, I have gone back to a fixed Canon or Sigma 15mm Fisheye.....Sharper in the corners being a fisheye and simpler to use.....

Just one little guy's opinion :)

  7. well it does take the zoom out of the zoom doesnt it. On the other hand there are no prime rectangular lenses in the 10-12 range.

But anyhow: based on earlier positive messages (also some earlier ones from you dhaas) I just bought a sigma 15mm on ebay...., and will now not buy any new lenses any more, for a while at last....

  8. Hey... thanks for the replies...

Ok, one more question... I dive mainly in two places... in the UAE and in the Red Sea...

In the UAE (where I dive most), the viz leens more towards the crappy side most of the time, while the red sea is deep blue incredible Viz.

If You had a choice which Lens would you use? the 10-20 or 18-70?
