  1. "TOKYO - A species of shark rarely seen alive because its natural habitat is 2,000 feet or more under the sea was captured on film by staff at a Japanese marine park this week..."

Anyone know what species this is?

  2. frilled shark, Chlamydoselachus anguineus

  4. We think it may have come close to the surface because it was sick, or else it was weakened because it was in shallow waters

So in other words the scientists have no idea why it's sick or why it wandered into shallow water.

Not dangerous but teeth are sharp enough to inflict lacerations on the hands of the unwary scientist examining its mouth

Is it just me or are these scientists not the brightest bunch.

  5. Here is a CNN link to some footage someone sent to me. There is an annoying 2 second commercial in front of the underwater footage...

Looks real to me... ;)...it must be sick or something to come up so shallow.

  6. At 2000 feet down, it heard a voice in it's head, "swim into the light...." And then it died.

  7. Very cool. It just confirms how little we still know about the oceans. Lucky for this shark it has no dorsal fin...maybe won't be targeted as a future deep shark fin source!
