D200 Housing Question

  1. Greetings,

Every time I travel to the tropics, which is once a year at best, I drag my camera gear with me and always return home disappointed that I wasn't able to get underwater shots. I tried the disposable underwater 35mm film cameras and I am convinced they use 6400 speed film as images are grainy and without color at shallow snorkelling depths. I haven't used one of these since 1998 so maybe they are much better.

During my research I have stumbled across a very affordable solution that I hope might work well for snorkelling type of photos. I fear it is the $299 Home Theater-in-a-box in this world of multi-thousand dollar home theater systems. Are the ewa-marine bags worth getting into for shallow water photography?

I would love an Ikelite and strobes but that looks to be a $2,000 solution that won't get used more than once or twice per year.

I checked the last few pages for threads on the ewa's and didn't see any so hopefully this thread hasn't been hit too recently.

Any thoughts on the pluses and minuses are greatly appreciated.

    Greg

  2. Think about renting a housing and stuff for once a year; you have a great camera, it would be a pity to compromise your results. If you're interested, contact Ryan at Reef Photo (advertise in the sidebar on this site). My prediction is that you'll get the bug and buy a housing eventually. :)

  3. Well the Ewa Marine will be better than that poor plastic crap you/we are oblicated to call camera :) , better yet would be to get a compact camera and its dedicated housing, price are more than affordable today and quality is up to speed. plus many will go down to 140 feet, have a built in flash, a underwater color correction setting and a decent buit in macro mode.

Check the Canon, Nikon and Olympus Web site for starter and the forum section dedicated to those point and shoot cameras.

    Regards

  4. HI,

If you are looking for housings you can aways get good deals

on E-BAY. You may even get a camera/housing it is always worth

a look.Or you could look on this great web site, you also know that

the housing has been looked after its worth a look, good luck

Question why the D200 if you are just starting out this is a

    expensive starting point

    Andy :blink::)

  5. For less than $500 you can get an Olympus 350, even shoots raw, and the Olympus housing. Add a small strobe for $150.
