Hi all. I've been using an S80 for awhile and pretty much decided not to upgrade to a G7 due to it's not seeming all that much an improvement in the reviews. I'm wondering if anyone here has an opinion?
Shots below where it says 'new camera' are with the s80
Hi fondueset:
Thanks for posting your S80 photos from Lake Michigan. I enjoyed browsing through them and looking at the settings.
A stupid question: looking at the EXIF info, some say "no flash fired, compulsory flash mode". Doesn't compulsory flash mode mean that the flash will always fire, no matter what? Seems like a contradiction in terms.
Also, did you use an external strobe with any of your S80 photos, or was everything done with the internal? And what was the usual depth you were shooting at -- couldn't be too deep. because you still have decent light and color.
Thanks,
Mark (Winnipeg)
Thanks Mark,
There is only one photo up there with flash - it has some bass silloutted against the surface - it was taken with my casio exz57.
I just turn the flash off. All the shots are taken freediving with depths ranging from 3 to 45+ feet. You can pretty much tell by looking as you mentioned. I'm having to go deeper now that it's winter and the shots of walleye at the bottom were taken last week somewhere between 35-45 feet in very poor light. Most of the shots of freshwater drum were around 15-30 feet often with nice mid-summer sunlight. Down to 25 or so theres still quite a bit to work with color-wise if it's a bright day.
My only complaint with the s80 - compared with the casio exz57 I was using for the first half of the site - is focus speed. The casio was extremely fast focusing though, obviously, the images are much richer with the Canon. Hence this thread wondering about the focus speed mainly.

Found an answer to the speed question - the G7 focuses about one fifth of a second faster at full wide. It's the same prefocussed.
S80 0.75 seconds
G7 0.54 seconds
When alls said and done I don't see the G7 as enough of an upgrade.
