Powershot 620-630-640 with IKE housing + lenses

  1. I am the proud owner of a Powershot 620 in a Canon housing at the moment but looking to upgrade my kit, mainly because the oppurtunity to get some wetlenses.

Was looking at a IKELITE housing for the camera with a DS-51 strobe for these.

Now the questions. How would a wideangle lens perform on the housing, any significant diffrence?

I might have a potential buyer for my system so in that case I'll upgrade to a 630-640. Like the bigger screen on the new models.

The 2 extra megapixels that the 640 posseses from the 630 don't make a big diffrence does it? I think the both cameras got the same sensors.

Also had a quick glance at the 710IS, but the 6x zoom lens would not work very good with the wideangle lens would it?

Also if anybody has some info about the perforamce of the DS-51 in use that would be good.

  2. bursprak,

The newest Canon A630 / 640 cameras are faster AF, a bigger screen and work very well in the Ikelite housing and EV cotnroller fired DS51 strobe. The "A" series, as your A620 also using 4 AA sized batteries (NiMH recommended) will deliver several hundred shots with lots of review time on the LCD before needing to recharge them.

Two shooters I know just went on a trip and got great pics with their Canon A640 / Ikelite housing / DS51 systems.

The biggest difference in the Ikelite housings, although more $$$$, is robustness and a bit more "emergency room" around the camera if you mis-assemble it and could catch water entering before it toasts your camera. Plus less fogging problems due to a bit more air space around the heat generating LCD you are using all the time with this style camera.

Wide angle options abound, including Ikelite's new W20 lens with 67mm threads that fits right on the Ikelite A630 / 640 housing. No adapters needed.

Any vignetting (varies with camera brand / model and how it sits in the housing when the lens is at wide angle position) can be cured with a minute "tap in" of the zoom. Still will give a plenty wide view close enough for your strobe to light color....

    Hope this helps!

  4. Hey guys

this a64o ikelite combination is one im thinking of. i have a inon d180 strobe how wwould you suggest i set this strobe up with this system.

also im finding it hard to get the size of the ike housing could you post some dimentions of your housing please?

i wouls also really apreciate a few photos of different ike and a640 set ups and macro lense options

    thanks heaps

  5. Jugglematt,

    Housing photo is here:

    http://www.ikelite.com/web_two/can_a640.html

The housing is small enough to hold with one hand, and has a nice little black plastic "thumb rest" on the back top right. This and the trigger being sprng loaded make this set up easy to shoot if not using a handle / tray and accessory strobe.

I will measure the actual housing dimensions (or get specs, don't have one here right now) and get back to you.

    PM me....

  6. thanks for the photos
