Hienrichs Weikamps Digital Adapter work with Ikelite SS50?
9 posts
Has anyone used Heinrichs Weikamps Digital Adapter with Ikelite analog (NON-Digital) SS50, ss100,ss300 strobes? If you have experiences with this setup or similar please tell me how you got it to work/settings etc. as well as what does work and what doesn't.
Thanks!
No, it does not work. The strobes need the newer IGBT gateway (I think I said that right) in order to provide the stroboscopic preflashes required for iTTL or eTTL.
Cheers
James
Yes, it does work. Although no real TTL, but you can control the strobepower by 1/3 ev increment in camera. Without the convertor you have only 1/2 and Full.

For Nikon D70, D80 and D200, the HW converter will not do iTTL for any of the older Ikelite strobes, but will give you fine manual control (essentially full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and stops in-between) for all small Ikelite TTL strobes (MV, SS50, Ai100). It will give manual control for the SS200, but only in larger increments (essentially the same as the manual switch on the strobe).

If your camera will do TTL strobe control, without the need of preflashes, then the heinrichs DA and SS50 will work fine. It will not follow pre-flashes with this strobe, or with the oldest, non-updateable DS-50 either.
Great input! Yesterday Canon USA confirmed that my Powershot S80 while in manual mode control (of aperture and shutter) does not preflash. So leaving the SS50 in TTL mode with Heinrichs Digital Adapter OA should work for my camera setup as you have confirmed by doing a test with the SS50's. Thanks so much for helping the Powershot S80 users! I'm glad I can re-use my old Ikelite Substrobes.

I asked Matthias what the magnet was for and this was his reply:
When using the S80 with the old (non-DS) Ikelite 50, the settings 2-2-1-1-1 are suitable (One preflash is suppressed).

So now temptation got the best of me and I tried unsucessfully to changed the DA2 to the suggested setting for my Canon Powershot S80 use with the Ikelite Substrobe 50 and bungled it up I think. Has anyone modified the settings of the DA2 adapter, I'd like to ask if you can better describe how I'm supposed to interept the low ttl flashes and the pauses between them. I read the manual and am still at a loss.
To see how I got out of my problems with misconfiguring the HW DA2 go to
The directions with the DA2 are confusing. I'm glad my DA2 works with both my cameras. Can't you just set your S80 to slave?
FYI I found that in my SP-310, it's easiest to use slave mode. If I set my YS-60 to TTL, this effectively gives me 10 power settings, since that's how many the camera gives me. I can also use slave and set the flash to full or half power. And if I want idiot simplicity, I just leave the camera on auto flash. The TTL works pretty well.
