I feel I am missing a lens for mid size subjects like Eagle Rays and Sharks etc, the 12-24 some times seems to wide unless you get right on top of the subject and the 28-70 seems not wide enough, what lens are people using for mid size subject?
Doesn't Nikon have an equivalent to the Canon 16-35 (or even 17-40)?
You could try:
Nikon 35mm f/2 AF-D
(inexpensive, very fast, sharp, no zoom)
or
Nikon 17-35mm f2/8 AF-S
(flexible, fast, maybe able to find good deals used, many people use it for sharks)
Take Care,
Chris
PS, I wish nikon made a 40mm macro lens (I want the same functionality of the 60mm on a film camera).
I was happy with the results the Sigma 15mmfe gave me shooting sharks in the Bahamas. It forces me to be a bit patient and lucky (Waiting for subjects to get in close) but it also results in sharper pics with the reduced amount of water between port and subject. Of course, easy to fill a frame with the larger Tigers.

I think the lens Matt is talking about is the Nikkor 17-55 DX. It's not equivalent to the field of view of the Canon lens when used on Full Frame, but it's a nice (and very expensive) mid-range lens.
It's really a replacement for film shooters who used to use the 28-70 AFS F2.8
Cheers
James
i'm thinking about getting the NEW Sigma 18-55 mm f/2.8 macro (1:3). Probably it's a nice <500 USD alternative for the >1300 USD Nikon 17-55 mm, unless you don't like Sigmas in general. BTW, i noticed that you don't have a most commonly used 50 or 60 mm Macro, but that one is clearly not suitable for eagle rays etc.
best, Udo
Take a look at the Sigma 17-70mm. From the pics I've seen so far, seems like a very nice versatile lens. If I didn't already have a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, I'd snap one of those 17-70mm up.

Looks like there's even a Sigma 15FE for sale in our classifieds. This is a good inexpensive alternative to the Nikon 16mm FE.
